Beijing Night Foodie Walk

Beijing at Night: A foodie walking tour through diverse night markets

Experience the fascinating culture of Beijing in one of the most authentic ways possible – through its local cuisine! This 3.5-hour food tour begins with your guide meeting you at your local Beijing hotel. From there head to one of the most famous shopping streets in Beijing, Wangfujing Street, a cosmopolitan street that rivals any in New York or Paris. You will be captivated by this wide lane pedestrian only boulevard with its bright lights, numerous eateries, and varied department stores from local hat, candy and tea shops to standard Western shops such as Apple, H&M and The Gap. After strolling along Wangfujing we will head to the Northern Entrance and be greeted by a giant archway leading us into Donghuamen Night Market. Upon entering you will be greeted by exotic sights and smells as you wander down the narrow corridor packed with food vendors selling local treats and more exotic fare such as scorpions, starfish, beetles and silkworms. Take a peak down the various alleys where food vendors are hawking noodle soups and other vendors are selling everything from souvenirs to electronics.

While Wangfujing should not be missed on any trip to Beijing, it can be a bit touristy and much of the food is not representative of what local Beijingers eat. For a more authentic food experience we will begin a 15 minute walk to Longfusi Night Market hutong area, passing by Wangfujing Church (St. Joseph’s Cathedral)

Our first stop will be at the Shan’xi restaurant – Xibei You Mian Cun. Shan’xi is a lesser populated province in China where many tourists do not visit or have a chance to experience its cuisine, a blend of Northern Chinese and Mongolian fare. The region is famous for handmade noodles, fried flatbreads, pastries, vinegar and other flour based treats. Here we will sample some of their specialties such as youmian wowo (steamed oatmeal noodles) or their delicious lamb skewers.

Our last stop will be at Longfusi night market. While Wanfujing and Donghuamen tend to be on the tourist path, Longfusi is a local Beijing haunt where more traditional Beijing food is served. Here we will sample some specialties.

At the moment Longfusi was closed for government construction work, so after the Wangfujing Church visit, we will take you to the Local hutong street to try the local cuisine, please read this page

A Brief History of Sights Visited
Wangfujing is a 700-year-old commercial street about ½ mile long and 40 yards wide. It is the busiest street in Beijing where it is said up to 500,00 people every day can be seen shopping, strolling and eating their way through the various establishments. Longfusi was a temple built in 1452 during the Ming Dynasty for officials to worship. Later, during the Qing dynasty it was converted into a Tibetan Buddhist Temple. The temple was destroyed by a fire in 1901 after which the area was abandoned. During the 1950’s the area would make its way back as a flea market, then become a famous shopping street akin to today’s Wangfujing Street. Today the area is most commonly associated with Longfusi Snack Street.

Amazing experience that I will always remember. True highlight of my time in China. If you like food and you want to try some local treats, this tour is for you. Some tours can be uncomfortable. Not with Christina. She put us at ease immediately and felt like a new friend, not a tour guide. The tour was filled with food and so much fun. The best part was that she knew the story behind everything. It felt so personal. What a wonderful way to learn about a new place. if you’re even thinking about this tour, book it!

My husband and I aren’t “foodies” – we are “eaters”. No matter where we are in the world, we prefer to eat where the locals eat. The Night Foodie Walk + Hutong Tour with Christina was one of the highlights of our trip. I booked about a week in advance, Christina promptly responded to emails and answered all of my questions. I recommend this as a first stop on your visit to Beijing because you will learn local customs and culture and be more prepared to order food on your own. Christina is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate sharing her experiences growing up in the hutong and taking us to places where she dines with her family. We tried food we probably would have never discovered or attempted on our own (who knew Donkey was so delicious?) and even went back to one of the places we visited on our own the next night. I can’t recommend Christina or this tour more. Truly a highlight of our visit. You will feel like you are out and about with an old friend. Thank you Christina!

Wake Up With Beijing

While other tourists are sleeping get a chance for a true glimpse into real Beijingers starting their morning. This local morning market and street tour will begin with your guide meeting you at your Beijing hotel. Then head through the old quarter of the city, an area hidden away and often overlooked by most guidebooks. Stroll up to the morning market to watch vendors selling and locals buying fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, snacks and clothing. Wander around and get a peak at exotic foods and what produce is in season. The smells, sights and sounds of the market are sure to whet your appetite for the authentic breakfast foods we will soon be sampling.

With the rush of the morning market ending and its transformation into a parking lot, then we will have an authentic Beijing breakfast followed by a tasting of traditional Beijing snacks such as fried breads, soy milk, steamed dumplings, flour soup, dou zhi (a milk made from the mung bean that is especially enjoyed by elders) and jiaoquan ( a golden, crispy, fried circle treat).

A Brief History of Longfushi
Longfusi was a temple built in 1452 during the Ming Dynasty for officials to worship. Later, during the Qing Dynasty, it was converted into a Tibetan Buddhist Temple. Today the area is most commonly associated with the morning market and Longfusi Snack Street.
Highlights

-Getting up early and heading to a local market you will get a chance to see Beijing in ways that few tourists have a chance to.
-Go to an authentic, lesser toured market visiting local venues and much more.
-Shop for fresh Chinese edibles and condiments among the locals
– Try 6-8 various traditional breakfast treats and gain insight into daily Beijing life and its cuisine.

There are few things that we like more than a morning market visit. We love the local markets and think you will too, so we have put together a morning tour through the freshest, tastiest places in the local neighborhoods.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH FOOD TOUR

An authentic culinary tour through Lishi hutong, one of the lesser tourist visited hutongs.

Please join us for a culinary tour and experience the real Beijing as only a local world. Our guide will meet you at your hotel to begin this four hour excursion. From your hotel we will visit the Lishi Hutong area where you will be immersed into the real tradition of Chinese culinary culture and get the complete experience of hutong cuisine like an insider. Explore the charming traditional community, walk around the produce market and visit a local courtyard home to taste unique delicacies made with fresh native ingredients.

A Brief History of Hutongs

Hutongs are a type of narrow streets or alleys, commonly associated with northern Chinese cities, most prominently Beijing. Hutongs are residential neighborhoods which still form the heart of Old Beijing and represent an important cultural element of the city. Their tapestry of diverse cultures, mouth-watering cuisines, unique architecture and fascinating stories make them unforgettable destinations. Hutongs originated during the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) but really began to flourish during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). However with the passage of time and the modernization of Beijing many hutongs began to disappear. They have now become representatives of Beijing’s culture for locals and tourists alike and many have been given protected status.

EXPLORE THE OFF THE BEATEN PATH HUTONG WITH US

Highlights

While there are many hutongs to visit in Beijing, most tourists only go to a handful of them which can be overrun with other tourists. On this off the beaten path food tour we will visit Lishi hutong with a local guide who has intimate knowledge of the surrounding area. Here you will get to experience what it truly feels like to be a local on a more personal level without the crowds.

Included will be 6-8 different food tastings at various diverse locations, such as markets, shops, bakeries and restaurants. You will visit local haunts, get a chance to meet the owners and explore historical sites that few tourists have an opportunity to experience. No chain restaurants here – we will visit mom and pop specialty food shops to try authentic items such as delicious duck necks and sesame cake.

Also wander through a maze of courtyards and spend time with a neighborhood family to get a glimpse of what life is like for a real Beijing hutong resident as you are invited into their home. Here traditional handmade Beijing noodles with pork and sides will be served and you get a chance to feel like a true hutong resident! By staying off the beaten path you will also have a unique chance to support a local community while being entertained by the sights and smells of true Beijing.
